I had a revelation last night. I am going to participate in NaNoWriMo in November which if you don’t know is a little over a week away. It’s even more overwhelming for me because I am writing a short story for a competition but what is life without challenges. Last year I was terrified due to being intimidated, this year I have the same feelings just less of a chicken.
For those of you do not know about this event let me fill you in. NaNoWriMo a.k.a. National Novel Writing Month was started a few years ago to see if writers can write one novel, 50,000 + words in 30 days. It is no contest, there is no prize if you complete it or not although if you need a little more convincing almost a hundred novels have been published due to this November writing event.
Seasoned writers have created a disciplined routine obviously since plenty of literary greats currently are pushing out multiple novels a year. Amatuer writers have not mastered that kind of discipline yet. This is the perfect event for amateur writers. It will push you to write….everyday. In addition to crearing an account on their website you are linked to writers participating near you. Nice huh?
Tips for preparing yourself for this. Write a detailed outline on the novel you plan on writing. You won’t have to worry about getting stuck on the next scene or figuring out how you wish your story to flow.
Make a schedule, and unless you or your fam are on their deathbed KEEP IT! We all want extra time in the day since that is impossible utilize the time God has gave us now. If you do not make the time to consistently write, every possible excuse will push you farther and farther away from getting the novel done.
Tell everyone! Speaking from experience telling as many as people as you can will make you want to finish what you promised them you would do. Don’t be the girl/boy cried wolf. And that lame ass excuse you thought sounded good in your head will sound hella bad once it comes out of your mouth and into their ears.
Most importantly, have fun being creative. If you are not enjoying writing and creating then reconsider why you want to be a writer.
*Random Sidenote* Twitter will also be hosting a Fiction Festival November 28th-December 2nd. The details are sketchy so if anyone has anymore info on this new event holla at me please. Supposedly you submit a proposal in order to participate. Tell how you would promote your work of literary art on Twitter. Submissions are due by November 15th. Good luck!
Peace and luv!
