Toni Morrison Honors Dr Maya Angelou

image

There are some literary legends. One of them who are still living vivaciously, still inspiring the next generation of writers is Dr Maya Angelou. She was honored at the National Book Awards by her friend author Toni Morrison. She received the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community. Deserving this woman is who have changed the peoples’ view of writing and inspired so many, especially black writers who were hidden underneath fear, doubt and criticism. I don’t think she set out to do that, she just wanted to write and tell the truth but she did and we’re thankful that she became a writer. Toni said before her friend accepted the award, “Dr Maya Angelou you improve our world by drawing from us, forcing from us, our better selves.”

Once Dr Angelou accepted the award from her long time friend she responded with, “God put a rainbow in the clouds. You are rainbows in my clouds.” She finished by thanking the literary world whether she deserved it or not.

Hats off to you!

Peace and luv!

Shonda Rhimes Lands a Book Deal

image

I wanna be this woman when I grow up I swear. She’s such an inspiration to writers and women in general. As if we can’t get enough of her Shonda Rhimes will be relasing a memoir sometime in the year 2015 (yes we will have to wait that long). It will touch on her life as a single mother wanting and creating a successful career in the media. If you don’t know about this brilliant lady she is the first African American woman to create and executive produce a top 10 network series. She’s won plenty of accolades for her career like a Golden Globe, several NAACP Image Awards, Television Producer of the Year from the Producers Guild of America, a Lucy Award for Excellence in Television and a GLAAD Golden Gate award. I am actually excited about this memoir. I normally don’t get down with memoirs and biographies but I’ll check this one out.

Peace and luv!

Has Fan Fiction Gone Too Far?

I’m not a fan of fan fiction. The fact that anyone can make a little money off of the work an actual author has done drives me nuts. I mean all literary works are influenced by something in real life but fan fiction is going too far.

Now have this fan fiction idea gone too far? In my opinion hell yeah.

An unknown writer going by the name J. Lola has written a story called 50 Shades of Sin. This is the first to a series. A series about the destructive relationship of Chris Brown and Rihanna. The crazy thing is this fool didn’t change their names. Instead of Chris’ bad side being looked down upon the author hypes it up as being ‘desirable, even sexy’! At one point in the story Chris threatens a random person saying he would break his hand for attempting to come in between him and his boo thang Robyn. When he tries to warn her to leave him he says, “I’m fucked up. Really fucked up.” J. Lola has Robyn respond with, “I’m fucked up too. Lets be fucked up together!”

I have read a lot of b.s. in my 34 years and this is right up there with the worst. What popped up in this person’s head that made them think it was peachy to profit off of someone’s abusive relationship?! And aren’t they afraid of being sued? They wasn’t even trying to hide their true identity in the book. This is down right ridiculous. I may not care too much for Chris’ antics a.k.a. nine levels of foolishness but I don’t agree with profiting off it either! Thoughts? Sound off.

Juror B37 has change of heart

Juror B37 had a change of heart twenty-four hours after claiming she would write a book on being a juror. It all started after her Anderson Cooper’s interview last night. Added to a serious dose of reality she came to this conclusion:

“I realize it was necessary for our jury to be sequestered in order to protest our verdict from unfair outside influence but that isolation shielded me from the depth of pain that exists among the general public over every aspect of this case.”

Also:

“Now that I’ve returned to my family and society I have realized that the best direction for me is to go away from writing any sort of book and return instead to my life before I was called to sit on this jury.”

Glad she had a change of heart. Thoughts?

Joan Rivers in Hot Water

image

People need to understand that writers are just as important as any host on a television show. If it was not for the writers you would not have a show. Joan Rivers is learning that right about now.

Since April 17th Guild members have been on strike against Joan’s show on E! Fashion Police. It is not certain how long they have been treated unfairly but it is said that the members have only been paid half of the compensation that they were supposed to be paid and not given health or pension benefits. Now Joan you know you wrong for that. All that money you sitting on and you could not pay your people? Did you at least pay the hosts of the show? And what about your daughter? You probably paid them on time and the right amount huh?

On top of that Joan tried to be slick and become the writer for the show herself which honestly I thought she was however this is against strike violations. Now she has some ‘plaining to do in front of a judge. Good luck with that one, see if you can joke your way out of this one.

Help Women Have a Voice

Masha Hamilton is on a mission to give girls and women a voice, an education, health insurance and so much more. One way is thru her organization Afghan Women’s Writing Project which on the website features stories and poems. Masha uses literacy to help women; words are more powerful than you realize, thankfully this beautiful spirited woman has. She’s putting faces to women we probably would never have seen unless this organization wasn’t created. Visit awwproject.org to see how you can help. I do know one off the bat; buying her book What Changes Everything. With each digital sale a dollar will be donated to her non-profit organization. It shares the stories of Afghan women and women in Brooklyn. Odd pair but they do have commonalities if you just read the book to find out.

Again help a cause and read an awesome book.

Peace and luv!

Writing: From Marketing to Opportunity

DIGITAL DRMs

HarperCollins publishing is giving their authors an opportunity to give out their books before the release. Why? Well for people like me who would love the opportunity to pre-read novels and review them before they are released to the public. Here’s how it will work. HarperCollins will let authors give digital DRM protected copies of books for promotional purposes. Authors will get the QRCode for download at e.HC.com to pass out to selected authors, bloggers, etc. These downloads will only be read through Adobe Digital Editions (Nook and Kobo, but no Kindle – well damn). My suggestion to you? Get real cozy with some authors at HarperCollins and become the go to blogger as well.

Flash that Fiction

Flash fiction is becoming a big thing for the writing industry. I think publishers should capitalize on that but that is just a suggestion. It is a fictional story with 100 words or less. 100wordstory.org is a great place to test out your flash fiction. Go check it out and challenge yourself. This is a great way to prevent writer’s block. If you are writing a novel and cannot figure out the next scene hop on over to get your creative juices flowing. Paste a few in the comment section if you like to give readers a clue to what they are. And most importantly – have fun!

Calling all cute, funny kids!

During the ABFF there will be a casting call for funny kids ranging from the ages of 9-15 years old. So if your kid is funny as hell bring them to the Ritz Carlton Hotel on June 22nd. Register them at nickelodeonmiamiopencall.com to register them. Good luck. Maybe I will see them on a hit nickelodeon show.

Peace and luv!
