Universal Pictures Writers’ Fellowship

Great, memorable movies have become scarce as hell these last few years. Everything is remakes of what was already done. Originality has officially left the building. It’s rare that a beginning screenwriter/director will get shine on the big screen or the television screen. A few such as Lee Daniels and LaShonda Rhimes have slid through and I’m grateful because that is motivation for me but (and you knew there was a but) there isn’t enough good screenwriters. Well aspiring screenwriters listen up because opportunity is knocking at your door with a vengeance.

Universal Pictures (yes that Universal) has set up a writer’s fellowship program for up to five potential writers to work with the studio for a year. They will be able to:

Work on current projects
Pitch original ideas
Attend workshops
Receive mentoring
Interact with top literary agents and
Sit in on Universal’s executive meetings

Starting September 3rd applicants can submit their packets. Only online submissions allowed and only 500 will be accepted. The Writers’ Fellowship Application, a legal release form, resume, 2 letters of recommendations and a statement of purpose answers are what are required. Semi finalists will be asked for a 2nd screenplay. Ten finalists will then be chosen and be interviewed in LA. Finally 5 will be chosen as participants of Universal Pictures Writers’ Fellowship. Visit nbcunicareers.com for full info and good luck!

August 1st 2014

Why shall we mark this date? Actually you shouldn’t but E.L. James wants you to. August 1st, 2014 is the day the film adaptation of her thieving…oops did I say that…I meant series Fifty Shades of Grey will be released. You know my distaste for this woman and how she shot to fame by stealing a theme from another author but because I am a versatile blogger and my goal is to give you the info in all areas of the writing so you don’t have to go anywhere else.

Universal Pictures and Focus Features will market and distribute the first film to the series. Sam Taylor-Johnson will direct the movie and Kelly Marcel wrote the screenplay. The producers are Michael de Luca, Dana Brunetti and E.L. James. Count me out as one who will see this.

Create a storyboard

Wanna create a storyboard for your script? Amazon Studios has created a tool where a writer can create their own storyboard. Have it map out the characters and dialogue.

I visited the site and checked out some of the storyboards which were cute – simple. Amazon says it selects characters and backgrounds then turns it into panels with drawings. I wanna talk to someone who has done this to get more info, especially about the process of it so hit me up if you have done this program.

Writing: From Marketing to Opportunity

DIGITAL DRMs

HarperCollins publishing is giving their authors an opportunity to give out their books before the release. Why? Well for people like me who would love the opportunity to pre-read novels and review them before they are released to the public. Here’s how it will work. HarperCollins will let authors give digital DRM protected copies of books for promotional purposes. Authors will get the QRCode for download at e.HC.com to pass out to selected authors, bloggers, etc. These downloads will only be read through Adobe Digital Editions (Nook and Kobo, but no Kindle – well damn). My suggestion to you? Get real cozy with some authors at HarperCollins and become the go to blogger as well.

Flash that Fiction

Flash fiction is becoming a big thing for the writing industry. I think publishers should capitalize on that but that is just a suggestion. It is a fictional story with 100 words or less. 100wordstory.org is a great place to test out your flash fiction. Go check it out and challenge yourself. This is a great way to prevent writer’s block. If you are writing a novel and cannot figure out the next scene hop on over to get your creative juices flowing. Paste a few in the comment section if you like to give readers a clue to what they are. And most importantly – have fun!

Calling all cute, funny kids!

During the ABFF there will be a casting call for funny kids ranging from the ages of 9-15 years old. So if your kid is funny as hell bring them to the Ritz Carlton Hotel on June 22nd. Register them at nickelodeonmiamiopencall.com to register them. Good luck. Maybe I will see them on a hit nickelodeon show.

Last day for early registration

Yes it is the last day to register early for the ABFF but you can still attend, just for a little higher price. Where else would you be able to roam around with other fans and celebrities for 5 days?!

And if that isn’t exciting it will be in Miami Beach so you can work on that tan. Ok, ok it’s not all about fun and sun; numerous panels, master classes and hardcore networking.

The American Black Film Festival will go down on June 19th-23rd. Visit http://abff.com for more details.
